I came across an article today on TipNut.com that provided instruction and recipes to make your own laundry detergent. Read the full article here. It occurred to me after reading this article that although I make almost all of my other cleaning products, I have never even thought to make laundry detergent! I personally use Bi-O-Kleen Premium Powder and love it. Being the kitchen chemist that I am, I think I’d better give some of these recipes a try though. I plan to make these two this weekend:
Recipe #1 Liquid
1 quart Water (boiling)
2 cups Bar soap (grated)
2 cups Borax
2 cups Washing Soda
- Add finely grated bar soap to the boiling water and stir until soap is melted. You can keep on low heat until soap is melted.
- Pour the soap water into a large, clean pail and add the Borax and Washing Soda. Stir well until all is dissolved.
- Add 2 gallons of water, stir until well mixed.
- Cover pail and use 1/4 cup for each load of laundry. Stir the soap each time you use it (will gel).
Powdered Laundry Detergent – Recipe #9
- 12 cups Borax
8 cups Baking Soda
8 cups Washing Soda
8 cups Bar soap (grated)
- Mix all ingredients well and store in a sealed tub.
- Use 1/8 cup of powder per full load.
I will report back in a couple of weeks after I’ve had some time to test them. If anyone else tries any of the others (or has any recipes of their own) I’d love to hear your comments.
Hi,
This is awesome… i had been searching for a way to create my own laundry detergent… Thanks a lot for the info…
I’ve been using the dry recipe for almost two years now and love it, my towels need no fabric softener, and the clothes are every bit as clean as with commercial products. I usually use Fels- Naptha bar laundry soap, which can be found at King Soopers. I recently used a pink laundry bar soap that I bought at WalMart, but it’s a little too soft to grate well. I have an old coffee grinder that I use to ‘grate’ the bar soap. I leave a bar soap package open for a few days so the consistency will grind better.
Thanks Laura for a wonderful website!!!
Thank you for commenting! It is nice to know people are reading.
I just made my 2nd batch of the liquid recipe. I love it. I have a HE front loader so I have to use liquid. It is safe because Borax and Washing Soda and Soap are low sudsing which is the reason why one has to use HE laundry soap. The box of Borax also proclaims that it is safe for HE washers!
The best reason to make your own- LOW COST. I live in Western PA & it costs me around $3.50 to make almost 3 gallons. For a family of 5 with 3 kids age 3-5-7 and a husband who does a lot of dirty work, this detergent cleaned well and one batch lasted us 3 months!!! It saved me at least $50!! Thanks!
Thanks so much for updating us with your results Melissa! I am so glad you liked it!
